2. Kamu menjumpai sekeping not 50 ringgit. Nota: Ini cuma soalan. Ini bukan kesimpulan.

It's kinda normal in most places over here. There are times when you might be afraid of thieving especially when there are many pak itams in the community. Far be it from me to be a racist, it's the reality and we have to be aware of the situation.

In most other occasions, yes it is safe to leave your properties alone. People here don't even have to lock their house doors but of course most people choose to be cautious. In Muslims community, the situation is even better. In conventions and conference, the seller can join a lecture he/she likes and leave the stuff outside. People will definitely pay.

Pedot might have a different view regarding this matter since he lives in a bigger city and bigger community than me.

Anyway, with regards to the money on the ground, it depends on the amount. If it is 1 dollar or less, i think no one really cares. If it is 20 dollars and above, people might pick it up and send it to the security office. If it's in between 1~20 dollars, then it depends on the person's morality.

About red-light, after 3 years driving here, I definitely will stop. My first impression was that everyone stops at the red light even at 2-3 am. So why shouldn't I? No one will honk at you if you stop. Then, at school we learn a lot.. and i mean a lot, about ethics and morality and it will be difficult for you to pass a moment when you cannot stop yourself from thinking whether what you do is ethical or not.
Heck, most of the pedestrians here even wait for the green light to cross the road at 2 am in the morning.

echopena, what "pak itams"? you stink! now, i am a smellist!

i doubt that the penjuals would get the revenue as they supposed to every single day. hope they learnt accounting before.

in responding 1,2 and 3; i believe that we've got to be practical in life. however, in the end, what's practical to me not necessarily practical to you.

Taufiq: Are we talking about Ipoh vs Jabi, or Urbana-Champaign vs Cleveland? Champaign kecik aje. Ke the difference in sizes of the respective campus town (UIUC vs CWRU)?

Ape2 pun, the major difference in demographics between the two cities is the black-white ratio. (1-3 in Champaign compared to 1-1 in Cleveland). And in talking about crime to race relationship, it's actually more helpful to forget about the color, and focus instead on the geographical and socioeconomic factor. Blacks in high-earning suburbs are less likely to commit crimes compared to whites in ghettos. Of course this is a gross simplification, but race and crime are tied up in the most misleading manner anywhere on earth. I mean, we still have to think about arrest rate, incarceration rate, etc.

Getting back to the topic, I would go with Taufiq's answer. Particularly, regarding the stop light question, you would be surprised on how tricky and ninja-like the police can be in the US. Ever watched Harold and Kumar? The scene where Harold wanted to cross the road and the police emerged out of nowhere? That's basically the reason why I stop at red, because the police could be lurking somewhere. Also, there's the blinking red/yellow lights cases too, which I think does not exists in malaysia (tak sure tapi, dekat Ipoh takde).

But of course that's not the point of the OP. My answer for the questions (keeping in mind aku dekat US, because might be different if I'm back in Ipoh):

    1. Pedal brek.
    2. Kalau 50 ringgit, ask around dekat orang Malaysia. Kalau 50 dolar, masuk dalam poket, tapi pegi return dekat balai polis.
    3. I won't even go to class kalau cikgu tak datang.

hhmm...when i first entered mrsm taiping, i respected the students, and it never crossed my mind that someone who is studying in the 'elite' school (bak kata pengetua dulu, "you all are gifted and talented") would steal.

    but i was wrong.

i think the safest place to have this kind of business is the mosque or madrasah.

would i stop at the red light? i would. but if it takes too long for it to turn green, i don't hesitate to press the gas pedal.
    i have my reason.
at 2 in the morning, a girl, alone, in KL?????

RM50...hhhmmm....i will leave it there. the owner would probably be looking for it.
    i wont take notes.
    but i will take coins.

cikgu takde? saya tak kesah...buat tak tau je...masih lagi boley concentrate, especially kalau maths. hahahaha!

If you come to the US or at least read about crime news in the US, you'll know what do I mean with 'pak itam'. For the Malays, we use the word 'pak itam' since if we say 'black' while speaking Malay, we will automatically be labelled as racists since that's the only word they would understand.

Anyway, since that's not what we are discussing about, i'll just clear it up that for Malays over here, 'pak itam' means the Black people, mainly Afro-American. Like the other people's explanation above, stealing is not in their DNA but it's more because of their social status. It also does not mean that white, latino, asian etc do not steal.

I agreed the most with what Pedot has said about the police cars that are always lurking somewhere in the dark even at a place you can't even imagine of. Nevertheless, I fully respect them since they do their job diligently rather than just sitting on a chair while eating shrimp fried rice and use laser guns to catch people who are speeding etc.

Lepas 20 kereta, balik rumah tidur. Hujung bulan saman sampai rumah.
